Forbes: The AI Unicorns You Didn’t See Coming

The unlikeliest heroes are taking center stage in the AI age.

Leaders are in the throes of an existential crisis. Three out of four CEOs globally fear they will lose their jobs if they do not deliver AI results. In the U.S., the number climbs to four in five. And yet, 95% of AI projects produce zero ROI, per MIT.

So leaders are told, “Do the next-to-impossible, or you’re fired.” It’s what I call the generative AI chasm.

And yet, only the fraction of leaders who identify the right places for AI-driven automation are redefining competitive advantage, profitability and velocity.

It takes a unicorn.

In few places is innovation more urgent than in logistics and supply chain. Tariffs are compounding the pressure to drive operational efficiency—without sacrificing customer experience. And yet, how can old school compete for talent with Silicon Valley?

A handful of companies are defying the odds.

Beating The Odds In Logistics And Beyond

PITT OHIO, a mid-sized trucking company my company works with, is an intriguing example. They had no AI team. But instead of accepting the status quo, the CEO and executive team gathered for a half-day workshop, aligned on one bold question: How can AI improve our business?

They started small, identifying a clear yet powerful challenge—streamlining the flood of pickup requests arriving daily via email. Six months after our first line of code, their solution, which automatically processed inbound pickup requests, was live in production.

This solution has accelerated their customer processing speed by 30 to 60 times, has increased their accuracy and is reducing order-handling costs.

AI financial impact is by no means confined to trucking. IDC and Microsoft have reported 3.7 times return for every dollar spent on generative AI. In their report, they look at companies succeeding across industries, including those in financial services, media and telco.

The lesson is clear: When deployed thoughtfully, AI isn’t about hype or experiments. It’s about measurable business outcomes—today.

The Big Lie Of AI Consulting

Across industries, enterprise leaders are spun the same false narrative by conventional consulting firms: “Don’t expect ROI for three years.” It keeps the big four in business. It’s not innovation—it’s an insurance policy.

In my role, I’ve found this simply isn’t true. Supply chain, retail, financial services and healthcare are proving this is a myth.

Our firm has helped thousands of leaders shape their data and AI strategies. In doing so, the same questions surface time and time again:

• Am I safe?

• Is my team safe?

• Is my company safe?

The answer? No. You’re not safe. AI isn’t coming for your job. AI is coming for your company.

Here’s the truth: AI success isn’t just about strategy—it’s about culture. If you don’t address the fear in your organization—if you don’t help your teams shift from anxiety to empowerment—you’ll never unlock the full potential of AI.

It’s not us vs. AI. It’s us plus AI.

The thrill of my career is watching leaders move from fear and inertia to empowerment and action. To see organizations shift from feeling overwhelmed to building AI in production now—with hope, unified vision and momentum.

So, what can you do?

As I’ve written previously, there are a number of best practices we can all follow. With those starting points in mind, you can set your strategy, get your data ready and go get a quick win.

The Road Ahead: Unicorn Or Dinosaur?

AI is redefining business landscapes. Whether you realize it or not, every company is now an AI company. Leaders who seize AI now—focused on the right problem—are writing the future of their industries.

They continue to turn heads. And they continue to prove unicorns don’t always come from Silicon Valley—yet fossils are ubiquitous.

The question for leaders isn’t whether they’ll integrate AI into their operations. It’s whether they can act—before their competitors do.
